PortaSplit Troubleshooting & Error Codes

Most PortaSplit hiccups have simple explanations, and many aren't faults at all. Here are the common issues, what they usually mean, and which ones need a call to customer service.

PortaSplit air conditioner running in a room

Start with the basics

Before assuming something's broken, run through three quick checks. Is the air filter clean? Is the unit standing on a flat, level surface? Are the windows and doors closed? A surprising number of complaints — weak cooling, rattling, the unit cutting out — trace back to one of these.

Common problems and what they mean

The unit doesn't turn on when I press ON/OFF+

This is often the built-in protection feature, not a fault. The unit delays restarting to protect the compressor, which can take up to 3 minutes. In cooling mode it also won't run if the room is already colder than your set temperature, so try lowering the set temperature.

It isn't cooling the room well+

Check the obvious culprits first: make sure all windows and doors are closed, confirm the room isn't larger than the rated 42 m², and remove or switch off heat sources in the room. A filter clogged with dust or pet hair also chokes performance, so clean it. If it's still weak, lower the set temperature.

It's noisy or vibrates too much+

Stand the unit on a flat, level surface — an uneven floor is the usual cause of rattling and excess vibration. A blocked air filter can also add noise, so clean it if it's dirty.

I hear a gurgling sound+

A gentle gurgle is usually just refrigerant flowing inside the unit and should settle after a few minutes. If the sound is excessive or doesn't stop, contact customer service. If you suspect the unit is low on refrigerant or leaking, stop using it immediately and call a service technician.

What do I do if I see code P1 or EH44?+

These codes mean the indoor unit needs draining. Prepare a shallow container, remove the drainage plug at the back of the indoor unit, let the condensate drain out, then replace the plug and restart. If it happens often, contact the service centre.

The unit stopped unexpectedly and shows an error code+

Codes beginning with EH or EC point to a sensor, EEPROM or communication fault. Turn the unit off and contact the service centre — these are not user-fixable. See the error code table below for what each one means.

Problems, causes and solutions

The same issues laid out side by side, straight from the manufacturer's troubleshooting table:

PortaSplit problems, their possible causes and solutions.

Unit does not turn on when pressing ON/OFFProtection mode. In Cool mode, the room is already colder than the set temperature.A protection feature delays restarting to avoid compressor damage; this can take up to 3 minutes. Lower the set temperature.
Unit does not cool wellWindows or doors open; room too large; heat sources in the room; air filter blocked with dust or pet hair; temperature not set low enough.Close all windows and doors, check the room is within the 42 m² maximum, remove or switch off heat sources, clean the filter and lower the set temperature.
Unit is noisy and vibrates too muchThe unit is not on level ground; the air filter is blocked.Stand it on a flat, level surface and clean the filter.
Unit makes a gurgling soundUsually just refrigerant flowing inside the unit. Could indicate low refrigerant or a leak.It should stop after a few minutes. If it's excessive or persists, contact customer service. If you suspect low refrigerant or a leak, stop using it and call a technician.
Device stops unexpectedly — indoor unit may need drainingThe indoor unit needs to be drained (code P1 or EH44).Prepare a shallow container, remove the drain plug at the back of the indoor unit, let the water drain, refit the plug and restart. If it recurs, contact the service centre.
Device stops unexpectedly — critical errorAn internal fault shown as an EH/EC error code.Turn the unit off and contact the service centre immediately. See the error code table below.

Understanding the display codes

The display window shows a short code when the unit needs attention. The two drainage codes are something you can resolve yourself; the rest indicate an internal fault and mean you should turn the unit off and contact the service centre.

PortaSplit display codes and their meanings.
CodeWhat it means
P1 / EH44The indoor unit needs to be drained.
EH00EEPROM error.
EH60Room temperature sensor error.
EH61Evaporator temperature sensor error.
EC52Condenser temperature sensor error.
EH0bDisplay panel communication error.
FPFreeze protection is active.
CLActive Clean cycle in progress.

Note: FP and CL are not faults — FP shows when freeze protection is running, and CL appears during an Active Clean cycle.

When to stop and call a professional

If you smell burning, suspect a refrigerant leak, or see any of the EH/EC fault codes, switch the unit off, disconnect the power and contact customer service. The refrigerant circuit must only be handled by a qualified technician — never attempt a repair yourself.
